Samosa Saturdays
2278. Manny Singh Kang
Manny Singh Kang, from Wolverhampton, has raised over £254,000 since 2018 for ‘Dementia UK’ through his 'Samosa Saturdays' campaign, cooking and selling samosas for a small donation every Saturday at home Wolverhampton Wanderers FC games.
Manny is a keen Wolverhampton Wanderers fan, and wanted a unique way to combine his fundraising, while engaging with fans attending the local football matches. His first day of selling samosas in November 2018 raised £3,000, and the initiative has continued to grow, with Manny and his team of volunteers now cooking and giving out thousands of samosas to supporters in exchange for donations to ‘Dementia UK’.
Manny also undertakes other fundraising challenges, including completing a sponsored 195-mile trek from Wolverhampton to Newcastle for the Wolves’ fixture in March.
In addition to Manny’s ‘Samosa Saturdays’, he is an ambassador for ‘Dementia UK’ and he regularly speaks at schools and other organisations to raise awareness.
In a personal letter to Manny, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:
“Thanks to your incredible enthusiasm and energy, you have raised more than £250,000 through your sponsored walks, marathons and by selling your homemade “humble little triangles” at your beloved Molineux.
“I know you are also an Ambassador for Dementia UK and regularly speak at schools and in other organisations to help raise awareness.
“All across our communities there are extraordinary people like you, acting with kindness and empathy in the service of others – or to borrow from the Sikh teaching that I know inspires you, sevā.”
Manny said:
“Humbled to have been considered for this award. It’s the duty of all humans to be a Point of Light. The energy inside us all is the same and using it means we do justice to the human life we have been given. I thank all those that join me to help the causes we support.”
